Darik’s Boot and Nuke CD is a useful tool for anyone that wants to securely erase data from a hard drive. Using it is very simple, you need to first download DBAN, burn the image to a disk or create a bootable USB, and then boot into DBAN to perform the wipe. Why should you use DBAN to erase files from a hard drive instead of just manually erasing files or formatting your hard drive?
- Prevent Data Compromises and Identity Theft
Giving your computer away? Or maybe you are selling it to a stranger. Regardless of what you plan to do with your computer you want to make sure that all of your data is securely erased from your hard drive before the computer leaves your hands. Using DBAN will ensure that it is impossible to recover your data using forensic techniques. Many people do store sensitive information on their computer, and you don’t want that data falling into the wrong hands.
- Easy to Use
DBAN is very easy to use. After booting, you will see the DBAN menu with a list of options. If you are in a rush, you can just ignore everything here and just type “autonuke”. DBAN will proceed to automatically completely wipe the hard drive. This is great if you have a bunch of hard drives/computers that you need to clean up. You can also press F3 or Enter at the prompt to head to the advanced selection screen. Here you can choose exactly which drive to wipe, or hit the M key to change the wipe method. You can choose through a whole bunch of wiping methods, however for most users the Quick Erase will suffice.
- Free Tool
DBAN is free for anyone to use, no license needed. Companies and individual users both do not need to worry about license costs.
- Compliance and Regulations
Depending on your company or organization, you may need to comply with certain data regulations as to how your company’s data is destroyed. DBAN does meet the DoD 5220.22-M standard, meaning that it can be used in strict environments requiring high levels of data security.
